The Orange County Coder is a student-run, non-profit organization founded in 2013 to promote the understanding of programming and computer science in our everyday lives in order to share our love of computer science to Southern California. Its success would not be possible without the pioneering efforts of our previous leaders.
Dennis Shim, 2013-2014 President; CalTech, Class of 2018
Dennis Shim is currently attending California Institute of Technology and previously attended Northwood High School. Dennis developed great interest in computer science after learning Java, Python, and C/C++. He used Mathematica in a bioinformatics project and also created a Python search engine, winning several awards at the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. He also conducted research and built a caching system at UCLA. To spread his love of computer science to his high school, he founded a Computer Science club and led them in the American Computer Science League, Dave Wittry, and picoCTF competitions.
In addition to computer science, Dennis greatly enjoys math and science and the challenge that problem solving presents. He participated in various math competitions, including MATHCOUNTS, the AMCs, AIME, and the Southern California ARML team, and he was Co-President of the Northwood Math Olympiad Club. He was also the co-captain of the Northwood Science Olympiad team and had received multiple medals in regional- and state-level events. In addition, he was a Physics Olympiad silver medalist and received honors on the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam.
Dennis had been a volunteer with the Orange County Math Circle for all of his years in high school, and served as Director of the Middle School Math Club and Webmaster, building a new website for the organization. Armed with this experience, and with the desire to spread a love of computer science to all members in his community, Dennis co-founded the OC Coder.
Matthew Tang, 2017-2018 President; University of California, Berkeley, Class of 2022
Matthew Tang is currently attending UC Berkeley and previously attended high school at Northwood High School.
